MA in Cross-Sectoral and Community Arts, Goldsmiths College, London University

Course Convenor: Chrissie Tiller. This is an innovative programme for arts graduates, practising artists and workshop leaders who see the rapidly expanding area of arts in other sectors as a valid and practical way of developing a creative yet socially responsible career path.

The programme combines a balance between development of practical skills with self-reflection and theoretical study aimed at deepening your understanding of the contexts of the arts in other sectors such as education, healthcare, youth work, prisons, and business and regeneration. It also gives you a grounding in the practical, theoretical and management skills necessary to develop your career. The programme, delivered in partnership with the National Theatre Education and Training Department, builds on Goldsmiths excellent relationships with innovative artists and other leading organisations in this field.

Core courses cover: the history and context of community arts and its cross-cultural perspectives; the planning, communication and art form delivery skills necessary to deliver participatory arts workshops; current arts strategy and public funding policy; the core skills necessary to deliver arts programmes and workshops. You also choose options that may include the study of, for example, workshop development digital media for social change, applied world music, or the relationship between identity and education

There are regular postgraduate and departmental seminars by outside speakers, staff or research students. Assessment Practical and written assignments; dissertation of 10-12,000 words or a practice-based arts project, accompanied by a portfolio/case study of at least 6,000 words.
